Dr. Jia Chen, IBM
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone!
I figured I need to say something about “green” on this special holiday (and yes, I am partially Irish, and
the majority of my siblings have bright red hair and freckles as it runs through my family)
Last week, I had the pleasure to meet [Dr. Jia Chen]. She has a PhD
in nanotechnology and works in IBM’s Watson Research Center. She is recognized as one of the top 35 scientists
under 35 years of age by MIT, top 15 of the “Nano 50″, and one of the top 80 in the National Academy of Engineering.
The two of us presented to clients at thebmw Performance Center in Greenville, SC, on the topic of the “Green” IT data center. She covered all of the advancements IBM is making on the server side, and I covered
all the things on the storage side.
Thebmw Performance center is part […]

Daimler Mulls Closing the Doors on Maybach

Here’s a quick excerpt
Automaker Daimler is reportedly going to take a long and hard look at the case for shutting down ultra-premium marque Maybach. Daimler is said to be targeting a two-year plan to decide whether or not it’s worthwhile to invest more into the struggling Maybach, or if it’s time to call the game.
Daimler and Mercedes head Dr. Dieter Zetsche inherited the Maybach experiment from his predecessor Juergen Schrempp, which would seem to make it an easier for him to pull the plug. Though if the good doctor is looking for reasons, he need check no further than the brand’s poor sales figures; Maybach has only reached about ten percent of its original sales forecast.
Zetsche has said publicly that Maybach’s sales figures aren’t that important, and that the brand exists to show what the company is capable of at the highest level against rivals like. But Zetsche has also confirmed […]

Clarkson Settles Down, Purchases Sensible Family Sedan [Top Gear]

Here’s a quick excerpt
Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has finally acknowledged that his Lamborghini Gallardo and TVR-engined Land Rover may not be the most practical way to transport his family of five. So he’s purchased a 38-year old Grosser Mercedes 600, noting that it’s quite a bit less boring than cars like the 5-series or Lexus LS600h.
Writing in his Top Gear column, Clarkson notes, “This is the car used by Lewis Winthorpe in the film Trading Places. It was also used by Idi Amin, Mao Tse Tung, Leonid Brezhnev and Elvis Presley.
“From 1963 to 1981, this was the most expensive, most advanced and most governmental car in the world. When I have fitted flags to the front wings - black eagles on a red background - I shall feel like Mussolini.”
Clarkson goes on to note that his hand-built piece of history - which features hydraulic air […]

New Bike Fever - Rationalizing with Dollars
March 17, 2008 on 2:43 pm | In Uncategorized | No CommentsCopy 1 wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
N ew Bike Fever is one of those afflictions that gnaws at you around the clock until treated with the appropriate amount of Test Rides and ultimately the Purchase of the object of your obsession.
Many treatments have been devised to reduce one’s New Bike cravings but there’s nothing quite like closing the deal to bring one back to relative sanity.
I’ve been through this before, more than a few times and from my experience, there is no end to rationalizations one’s brain can conjure up to feed the need for the new bike.
So I decided to let the numbers speak this time. The above spreadsheet image gives me all of the ammo I need to free myself form the pre-buyers remorse.
Over the past 4 years I have ridden over 145,000 miles on motorcycles instead of using my dodge truck.
Using the Miles Traveled […]

Nelson Supercars Chevy Camaro - The “F Bomb” [Custom Cars]
March 14, 2008 on 7:15 pm | In Uncategorized | No CommentsDave Dragon wrote an interesting post today on
Here’s a quick excerpt
This is the Nelson Racing “F-bomb”. It’s a 1973 Chevy Camaro which belongs to David Freiburger, Cheif Editor at Hotrod Magazine. David’s Camaro has been caged and tubbed, and a 406 cubic inch twin turbo V8 was installed. We were a little disappointed to find out the car only makes 1540 HP and 1527 lb.ft. of torque. That sounds pretty weak for a Chief Editors ride. We’re not going to go braggin’ er nothin’ but a real Chief should be driving around in something tough and manly, like a Jeep Liberty.
At the very least that sucker should be packin’ some serious heat like that 2,200 HP quad turbo’d big block we saw a while ago. We kid, we kid, it’s likely the F bomb is named appropriately, because with 1527 lb.ft. of torque at your beck and call, that’s probably the only word […]

Here’s a quick excerpt
The Old Man & His Dog has asked me who Peter Brock is, besides obviously a racing car driver. I think the best way I can do this is to copy from Wikipedia as well as link so you can follow up with more research if you would like to. So this is the copy:
“Peter Geoffrey Brock AM (26 February 1945 – 8 September 2006) otherwise known as Peter Perfect, The King of the Mountain or simply as Brocky was one of Australia’s best-known and most successful motor racing drivers. Brock was most often associated with Holden for almost 40 years, although he raced vehicles of other manufacturers including ” href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki“>, Ford, Volvo, Porsche and Peugeot. [1] He won the Bathurst 1000 endurance race nine times, the Sandown 500 touring car race nine times and the Australian Touring Car Championship three times. Brock’s business activities included the Holden Dealer Team […]
